DC is a no car needed city. Find out all of the transportation options the Capitol City offers!
With the high cost of parking, congested streets and abundance of public transportation it is no wonder many people choose not to rent a car when they come to DC, and why many DC natives don't own cars!
Metro System
DC's Metro System is comprised of rail and bus components. The rail system is broken down by 5 lines identified by color, Red, Orange, Blue, Green and Yellow. The bus system is very thorough and in many cases can get you closer to your destination than the metro. If you aren't up for much walking the bus system could be right for you! Car Share
While a car share program may not be the best option for you if you are not already a member, it is a great way to just use a car when you need it. If you travel frequently to major cities with a car share program you find it beneficial to join. DC is part of the nationwide ZipCar Car Share Program. There is a $75 annual membership fee and then an hourly fee of $11-$16 depending on the car. This includes insurance on the car AND GAS! If you think a Car Share Program might be right for you visit www.Zipcar.com to learn more.
Bicycling*
DC has made huge strides in recent years in becoming more bike friendly. With added bike lanes and even a bike share program it is a great way to get around. You can rent bikes from Bike and Roll which is specifically geared to bike rentals for tourists and also offer guided bike tours. Or you can join the Capitol Bike Share program. You can join for a day, 5 days, a month or a year depending on how long you plan on staying! The Capitol Bike Share racks with kiosks are located throughout the city. Just follow the instructions, pay with a credit card and use the bikes as frequently as you would like within your allotted membership time frame.
*Not recommended for first time riders. While bikes are a great way to get around DC you must also remember that you are sharing some often congested streets with cars. Make sure to wear a helmet at all times. Be a courteous cycler to both cars and pedestrians. While many people do ride on sidewalks please not that there is a city ordinance against it and it is possible to be ticketed for riding on the sidewalk. This is also dangerous to both you and pedestrians around you.
